Many mental healthcare providers know little about transgender issues. Those who seek help from these professionals often educate the professional without receiving help. That is not the case at DQS Healthcare Group. Our founder Dr. Sadie Sheafe, Ph.D., is a Licensed Psychotherapist and Psychoanalyst, Board Certified Clinical Sexologist, Board Certified Diplomate in Social Work and Diplomate, American Board of Clinical Sexology. Dr Sheafe has been working in the field of mental health for over 26 years as a therapist, researcher, educator and speaker; both here in the United States and in Europe.
Dr. Sheafe has personally worked with over twenty-thousand men and women and children (both military and civilian) of all nationalities, creeds, ethnicities and socioeconomic backgrounds. Dr. Sheafe is the Chief Executive Officer of DQS Communications Healthcare Group, which serves hundreds of clients in the Hampton Roads Area of Virginia and surrounding regions.
Presently she is the acting primary provider for military-sexual-trauma victims and the Director of Substance Abuse Treatment in Mental Health and Behavioral Sciences for the Department of Veterans.
In addition, we have a team of psychiatrist, psychologist and licensed Clinical Social Workers to address all of your concerns.
If being a transgender individual is causing you distress or disability, as mental health professionals with over 150 years of combined experience we recommend therapy for internal conflicts about gender identity or discomfort in an assigned gender role, especially if you desire to transition. This distress is referred to as gender dysphoria and may manifest as depression or inability to work and form healthy relationships with others.
If you experience discord between your gender and the expectations of others or your gender identity conflicts with your body you may benefit by talking through your feelings in depth with one of our experience counselors and therapists.
Maybe you are a transgendered individual who is comfortable with your gender and whose gender is not directly causing inner frustration or impairing your functioning; you may just want to talk with an experience therapist to air your thoughts.
According to Wikipedia, the purposes for seeking mental health services vary according to the individual, and simply because a transgender person seeks treatment does not mean their gender identity is problematic. The emotional strain on dealing with stigma and experiencing transphobia pushes many transgender people to seek treatment to improve their quality of life, as one transwoman reflected:
“Transgendered individuals are going to come to a therapist and most of their issues have nothing to do, specifically, with being transgendered. It has to do because they’ve had to hide, they’ve had to lie, and they’ve felt all of this guilt and shame, unfortunately usually for years!”
Struggling to deal with the stigma still attached to identifying as transgender, many people also seek mental health treatment for depression and anxiety, and some transgender people have stressed the importance of acknowledging their gender identity with a therapist in order to discuss other quality of life issues.
In a combined 150 years of clinical and experience our therapists here at DQS Healthcare Group have worked with thousands of men and women who want to learn how to cope with current conditions, make quality of life improvements, change relationships, alter behaviors and in general feel better about themselves. It is our goal to help you better understand yourself and accurately clarify what you wish for.
